Epimedium

Epimediums are in the Berberidaceae family, including Mahonia, Podophyllum.  They are easy woodland perennials that thrive in medium to deep shade.  When established they are very drought tolerant.  In Feb.-March the old damaged leaves can be cut off so that he first flowers to emerge will show .  Many have bronze new growth that matures to a solid green.  In winter leaves turn mottled.

Epimedium pinnatum subsp. colchicum (Barrenwort):  Z 6-9 Iran.  In the berberidaceae family related to Mahonia, Podophyllum, Jeffersonia.  This is a slowly spreading evergreen with yellow flowers.  Great for the shade and is quite drought tolerant once established.

Epimedium rubrum:  Z 6-9 Asia. This is a red and yellow blooming epimedium.

Epimedium X warleyense:  Z 6-9 Asia. Orange and red blooms on twelve inches stems rise in April before the new leaves.
