Blechnum penna-marina (Little hard fern): Z 7-8This fern grows as a ground cover and forms large colonies. The fronds are between four to eight inches in length. The new growth begins from orange to dark green. This is native to alpine wet grasslands of Chile, Australia and New Zealand.

Hardy ferns
Blechnum niponicum pictum (Japanese deer fern): Z 6-8 When mature this rare deer fern has slightly broader fertile fronds than Blechnum spicant. The new growth is a red-orange and fades to a metallic lime green. These prefer full shade with moist fertile soil.

Blechnum spicant (Deer fern): Z 6-8 N.A.Native This evergreen fern has low arching fronds up to twenty four inches long tapering at the base. The fertile fronds are upright and resemble feathers.

Cheilanthes argentea: Z 7-8 This little deciduous fern has triangular fronds, which are green above and a contrasting white underneath. This prefers to go dryer during the winter with moderate water in the growing season. This makes a perfect sunny rock garden plant.

Cheilanthes sinuate (Wavy Cloak fern): Z 7-8 This fern has hairy gray green on top of the fronds and white on the bottom of the fronds. The fronds are six to eigthteen inches long. This too prefers a dryer situation with more water during the summer than winter.
Cheilanthes lanosa (Hairy lip fern): Z 6-8 N.A. Native. This fern has dark green hairy top with a light hairy coloration under the frond.
Cheilanthes tomentosa (Woolly lip fern): Z 6-8 N.A. Native. This is a small easy fern up to fourteen inches. The top of the frond is dark green, and the bottom is gray-white. This is a great rock garden plant.

Crytomium fortunei (Holly fern): Z 6-8 This semi-evergreen fern has strikingly unusual fronds, which resemble holly or Oregon grape. When mature the fronds are vase shaped and can reach over two feet.
Crytomium macrophyllum (Large-leaved holly fern): This is similar to Crytomium fortunei with larger more round fronds.

Crytomium falcatum (Japanese holly fern): Z 6-8 This holly fern produces glossy dark green fronds that are vase shaped and reaching over two feet.

Crytogramma acrostichoides (Parsley fern, American rock brake): Z 2-8 N.A.Native Just as the name suggests this fern resembles parsley. The sterile fronds reach up to eight inches with firtile fronds reaching up to ten inches. This is great for sunny and dry rock gardens.

Cyathea cooperii (Australian tree fern): Z 8-10 This is a massive fast growing tree fern that puts out new growth all summer. The trunk and fronds are covered in long brown scales resembling hair. This should be used as an understory plant with plenty of moisture. This should be protected during the winter by wraping the crown and possibly the fronds. It will be decidious when the temperature is in the teens.

Blechnum cordatum: Z 7-9 South Amererica. This is a masive blechnum to two feet tall and arching. Fronds are thick and leathery with orange new growth. Shadey and moist
Botrychium virginianum (Rattlesnake fern): Z 4-9 N.A.Native. This has a single broadly triangular frond. Grows in moist, rich woodlands in full shade. These do not like root disterbance and should not be transplanted once established.
