Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens: Z 4 8 N.A. Native.  The sepals and petals are purple-maroon and the lip yellow with red spots inside. This natural hybrid is one of the easiest cyp. to grow.

Cypripedium andrewsii: Z 4-8 N.A.Native  This is the natural hybrid between Cyp. candidum and Cyp. parviflorum var. parviflorum.  The petals are twisted brown with a creamy pouch and red markings.

Cypripedium montanum: Z4-8 N.A. Native Ht. 10-29". This is a multi-floral white bloom with dark brown twisted petals.  These mountain orchids grow in both dry deciduous forest and in damp soils near streams and marshes.

Cypripedium japonicum: Z 4-8 This unusual Cypripedium is found in mountain bamboo forests near water and light shade.  The bloom is similar to the North American native acaule except for being white and green with occasional pink and yellow.  It blooms in May and June.  The leaf is circular and pleated and sits horizontally looking like an Elizabethan collar.  This is a relatively easy species in mid to heavy shade, with moist, humus rich well drained acidic soil.

Cypripedium parviflorum var parviflorum:  This species is much like Cyp. Parviflorum var. pubescens but the pouch is less yellow and more of a creamy color.

Cypripedium kentuckiense:  Z 3-7 N.A.Native This stately Cyp. grows in the eastern and southern states in deep ravines.  They grow among deciduous and evergreen trees and prefer acid sandstone soils.  This is a large plant with showy flowers of green and purple with a creamy white or pale yellow lip.

Cypripedium macranthos: Z 2-5 These plants bloom hot pink or magenta.  These are native to Asia and Siberia.  They prefer very free draining soil with large particle size and a low content of organic matter.

Hardy orchids for the garden

Cypripedium reginae:  Z 2-8 N.A. Native.  This is one of the largest of the Cyp. These are large white blooms with pink on the puoch.  This is an easy Cyp. to grow.  Plant in part sun with moist well drained soil.

Cypripedium californicum: Z 4-8 N.A.Native  This is spcies that is endemic to Southern Oregon, and Northern California.  In the Wild it grows on serpintene sepage slops mixed with Darlingtona californica.  Plant in part sun, keep moist but not stagnant.

Cypripedium 'Ulla Silkens' (Cyp. reginae x flavum):  Z 2-8.  This is a vigerous x with large white blooms with dark rose pink -brown spots on the pouch.  The pure white sepals curve back like its parent Cyp. flavum.

Cypripedium yatabeanum:

Z 2-8 This is another Alaskan Cyp. and prefers cool growing conditions.

Cymbidium goeringii:  Z 7-9  This is a tough and easy evergreen terrestrial Japanese species orchid.  The leaves are strap like with jade green to yellow fragrant flowers in spring.  Needs  extremely well drained soil in light shade; works well as a rock garden plant.
