Diphylleia grayei: Z 4-8 This is an excellent shade garden plant that prefers humus-rich soil that stays moist all year. This umbrella-like plant is from China and Japan. It will produce small white flowers.

Podophyllum peltatum (American mandrake; May apple): Z 7-8 Ht. 12-24'' N.A.Native This plant has a white fragrant bloom that is formed on a nodding stem between two leafstalks. The leaves are scalloped and form an umbrella canopy above the bloom. Prefers moist rich woodland soil.




Podophyllum plants are best when grown in humus rich, well drained soil. They only put up one flush of growth each season, and takes several years for plants to settle in. Newly planted specimens can go into early dormancy. Be patient for these spectacular foliage plants to take form and show their colors.
Dysosma delavayi: Z 6-9 China. The foliage is patterned in red and green. Blooms are red and in small clusters between the leaves.
Dysosma difforme: Z 6-9 China. Mottled foliage with varying patterns. Pink flowers are borne directly below the leaf. Fruit are yellow-green and the size of a plum.
