Rodgersia and Darmera

Darmera peltata:  Z 5-9  N.A.Native.  This masive perennial is native to southern Oregon and northern California.  It grows along streams, and even in the middle where the rhizomes are completly submerged.  In the spring the pink-white saxifrag blooms emerge before the foliage.  The foliage can reach up to five feet tall and be over one foot across.  These are very adaptable to average garden soil with adaquate moisture.

Rodgersia aesculifolia 'henrici':  Z 4-9 China. This has deeply groved bright red-bronz new growth, fading to green.  Blooms in summer pink-white three feet tall.

Rodgersia podophylla:  Z 4-9 Japan, Korea. These grow in shaded, cool, and moist areas.  These have very great foliartexture when established in the garden.  The inflorescence emerges in summer and can reach more than four feet tall.

Astilboides tabularis:  Z 4-9 North Korea, China.  This Rodgersia relative can reach three feet tall and more than one foot across.  The blooms are tall above the foliage with plumes of creamy white flowers in midsummer.  Plant in moist rich shady soil.
