Thujopsis dolabrata (Deerhorn Cedar, Hiba Cedar):  Z 6-10 Japan.  This is a conifer with almost horizontal branches, and upswept tips (fan like).  Red-brown bark, leaves are dark glossy green with white undersides.  This is and ornamental slow growing tree, about 8 feet in five to ten years.

Thuja koraiensis (Korean Arborvitae):  Z5-9  China, Korea.  The leaves are bright silver green, with glowing silver-white undersides.

Rosa nutkana (Nootka rose):  Z 5-9 N.A.Native.  Fragrant pink single flowers, red hips in fall and winter.  The whole plant will put off a sweat smell after a rain. This is a scrub rose for the shade and full sun.  This grows in both dry and wet conditions. Very disease, and pest resistant.

Rubus parviflorus (Thimbleberry):  Z 5-9 N.A.Native.  This is a medium size shrub with large maple like leaves, and white single blooms, fallowed by red berries.  The whole plant puts off a sweat fruity smell.  Similar to its relative Raspberries this grows by woody canes, which are easily pruned. Thornless.  I can not believe that these are not more widely cultivated, when they have such great garden potential.

Stewartia monadelpha: Z 6-9 Japan, Korea.  When mature the bark is a bright red orange coler.  Foliage turns red in fall.  Flowers are white, with purple anthers.  Blooms look similar to and is related to Camellia. Very atractive as a structural focal point in a garden.  Plant in sun to shade with moist well drained soil.

Rhododendron macrophyllum:  Z 6-9 N.A.Native.  This is an evergreen shrub from coastal regions of western North America.  Dark green leaves with bell shaped pint flowers in trusses of 9-20.  Blooms in spring.

Ribes sanguineum (Flowering Currant, Winter Currant):  Z6-10  N.A. Native. This is a deciduous shrub with red brown bark and dark green lobed leaves.  The blooms are formed in late winter and are bright magenta.  Full shade, drought tollerant and salt spray tollerant when mature.

Sophora microphylla:  Z 8-10 New Zealand. This is an evergreen or semi deciduous tree.  The branches are angled and zigzag with small ovile leaves.  When the tree is mature it will produce yellow blooms in spring.  Sun to part shade.  Plant in well drained soil with pleanty of moisture.
