Gunnera perpensa (River Pumpkin, Wild Rhubarb)

Zone: 7 - 9
Natural Range: South Africa, Madagascar, New Zealand, Tasmania, Indonesia, Hawaii, Mexico, Central and South America.
Soil:  Moist, humus rich
Light: Part shade-sun
Height: 12" - 24"
Attributes:  Deciduous, 8" across round leaves.  Unusual flower spikes summer-fall.  Shallow rhizome.
Notes:  A rare in cultivation, but relatively common in the wild.  There is however habitat destruction and over collecting for the medicinal trade.   Gunnera perpensa is an intermediate in sized Gunnera that looks similar to a Caltha.  Like other Gunnera mulch the rhizome for more winter protection.  Keep moist and cool during the summer.
